Walker does an excellent job of portraying the vernacular of the 1950's South. The idea that the singer with all his wealth never finds contentment while the "colored" Gracie Mae is secure in her love and family. The fact of the young man entering the service and dying young also remined me of Elvis. The young man becomes a star with screaming fans, but he never feels the meaning of the song and returns again and again to Gracie Mae to relieve his shame and sorrow thru extravagant gifts.
